Itinerary

We begin at Knowth, often considered the "hidden gem" of the Brú na Bóinne complex. While Newgrange is more famous, Knowth is larger and archaeologically more complex.

  • Highlights: The site contains one massive mound surrounded by 18 smaller satellite tombs. Knowth is renowned for having the largest collection of megalithic art in Western Europe, with over a quarter of all known examples found here. You will see the beautifully carved kerbstones and learn about the two separate passages (Eastern and Western) that align with the equinoxes.

Next, we visit the jewel of the ancient world, Newgrange. Built around 3200 BC, this grand passage tomb is a masterpiece of Stone Age engineering and astronomy.

  • Highlights: Marvel at the massive white quartz façade and the famous "Entrance Stone" adorned with triple spirals. The site is most famous for its "Roof Box"—a specially designed opening that allows a beam of light to illuminate the inner chamber at dawn on the Winter Solstice. You will have the opportunity to enter the chamber and experience a simulation of this solstitial light event.

We then travel to the ancient seat of the High Kings of Ireland. While famous for its royal history, the Hill of Tara is dominated by a Neolithic passage tomb known as the Mound of the Hostages (Dumha na nGiall).

  • Highlights: Dating back to circa 3000 BC, this is the oldest visible monument on the hill. Unlike the long passages of the Boyne Valley, this tomb is shorter but historically rich, having served as a communal burial site for over a millennium. It is aligned with the sunrise of Samhain (November) and Imbolc (February), ancient festivals marking the turning of the Celtic year.

Our final stop takes us off the beaten track to the Loughcrew Cairns, also known as the "Hills of the Witch" (Sliabh na Caillí).

  • Highlights: A short but steep hike takes you to the summit of Carnbane East to see Cairn T. This rugged, atmospheric site offers panoramic views across 18 counties on a clear day. The back stone of Cairn T is illuminated by the rising sun during the Spring and Autumn Equinoxes, featuring incredible ancient artwork that remains open to the sky and wind, offering a raw and authentic connection to the past.
